Monitoring the flow of fumed silica powder – dosing control

 Weißes Pulver

What is fumed silica powder and what is it used for?

Aerosil® or HDK® are trade marks of different manufacturers – describing the same chemical substance: Fumed silica. Fumed silica is a very fine powder characterized by good flow properties and a particularly light weight – the density is 160-190 kg/m³ only. Fumed silica powder is often used as a free-flow agent. It is added to different powders like paints and coatings to prevent the powder particles from caking.

Monitoring the silica powder flow

Due to its low weight, measuring silica powder is a real challenge, especially because it is usually dosed in very small amounts. To control the dosing process of fumed silica one measurement solution in particular has established in the industry: The flow monitoring of the silica powder feed with flow sensor DYNAguard. This inline measurement has proven to be reliable even for the challenging properties of fumed silica. The technology has been successfully used in the chemical industry and by paint manufacturers.

How is the dosing of silica powder controlled?

Although the silica powder has almost no mass, there is one property that produces a very good measuring effect: the electrostatic charge on the surface of the individual particles. This electrostatic charge can be measured by the innovative DYNAguard flow switches. A significant change of the measured electrostatic charge is related to a changing flow of silica powder. This allows not only for plug detection but also for a flow trend.

The use of DYNAguard flow switches to monitor silica powder flow.

The advantage of the DYNAguard flow switch is that it is very sensitive to the powder flow, even for smallest silica quantities and pipe diameters. The DYNAguard product family comprises flow switches for integration in metal pipes as well as plastic tubes – for an ideal adaption – no matter how your dosing line looks like. The DYNAguard sensors have proven to provide stable and reliable measurements for silica powder in hundreds of applications.

Advantages of silica powder control with DYNAguard

  •  High sensitivity to the silica powder: 0.1 mg/m³
  •  Sensors for installation on steel pipes and plastic tubes or hoses
  •  Customization possible
  •  Flow alarm or trend measurement
  • Simple installation and commissioning
  • ATEX / IECEx available
